Perimeter security systems are not cheap. Unfortunately, at the implementation stage or, even worse, during operation, there will be errors in the project that we will discuss with the specifications and requirements of the client. We suggest that you learn this material from your colleagues - the result of the research will be passed on to the technicians of companies specializing in perimeter protection solutions. Integrating companies offered to share information about the most common mistakes when implementing perimeter protection system projects - mistakes that led to decreased profits and damage caused to the integrator's reputation. It was a question not only to describe mistakes themselves, but also about how they could be avoided. How to avoid common mistakes when creating and deploying a perimeter defense system. 1. Google Earth maps give a clear idea of the protected object... Some colleagues, instead of studying the object in the comfort of a cozy office, prefer to take advantage of electronic Google Earth maps. Recently, this same thing and recommend some projects to clients. Leonid Morozov, Manager of 'KGB Security Team *' from Sao Jose dos Campos, SP, believes that this is certainly not enough: 'There may be differences in elevation, pits and hills. On Google Earth, you simply cannot see them. ' In fact, compensating for height differences in the design of an electric fence can increase the cost by many thousands of reais, 'the best thing is to personally walk around the entire perimeter. So you know exactly what you will have to deal with at the beginning, ' - says Leonid Morozov. 2. Lightning cannot strike the wall... Therefore, there should be at least one more reason to explore the territory of the protected object. Any equipment that is installed at a height in areas affected by a storm can fall victim to lightning. This results in the need to purchase and install equipment that needs to be replaced, i.e. there will be costs for equipment and performance. 'Going to the structural part, there is always an interest in weather forecasting,' says Kevin Berry, chief engineer of Dowley Security Systems in Houston, Texas. By installing lightning rods and proper grounding and providing adequate protection of the power supply, the installer will incur some costs, but will avoid possible overruns and financial losses in the future. 3. Manufacturers honestly state the sensitivity of their cameras... In low light conditions, video quality can be significantly reduced - this is especially critical in systems with video analytics. The algorithms in this case are launched erratically, which could lead to the fact that the attacker can freely penetrate the protected perimeter, or, alternatively, the system will generate false alarms. Jacob Logreus, technical proposal preparation manager for 'G4S Technology', Omaha, SHT. Nebraska, says: 'The sensitivity, the leading manufacturers in the technical documentation, to say the least, is inaccurate. 'And if the integrator defect overestimated the camera, it is quite possible, it will have its own costs for replacing the equipment or installing additional backlight devices. Jacob Logreus says that the only way to truly appreciate the image quality is to have a real camera, take it to the installation and see for yourself what it can do. 4. The service life of system components is not so important... Perimeter systems are often installed in geographically distant locations, and this means that the cost of maintenance procedures may involve shipping costs. Canadian company 'Backup Online' Ontario UCIT had successfully implemented a number of projects for the protection of solar panels, with the life of about 20 years. Interestingly, in these premises, instead of traditional cameras with infrared illumination uses thermal cameras: they do not need such frequent replacement. President 'Online' Security UCIT Erik Mikkelsen said: 'Infrared illumination devices in 3-4 years deteriorate and need to be replaced, so the remote object is not practical to do them. ' Those who doubt this may have unpleasant surprises in the future in the form of inflated maintenance costs. The service life of cameras can be a critical parameter in relation to the profitability of the project. The UCIT Online Security Company has concluded that it is more cost-effective to use thermal imaging cameras with infrared illumination to protect solar panels with a lifespan of 20 years. 5. Operators solve the tracking ... Some perimeter security systems that use surveillance cameras can use centralized control. Operators at the remote control center are supposed to be able to effectively check the alarm, separating the real threat to security from random disturbances caused by natural factors. Bob Rikuchchi, CEO of 'Advanced Security Technologies' from Riverside, California, believes that the operator should know the destination. Where cameras are installed and what dangers can be expected ' to do their job at an adequate level, monitoring operators need some knowledge about the object. Rikuchchi, however, warns: ' applied at central control stations, software often does not provide the operator with information about the protected area. Recently, the situation began to improve, more and more often you can find control software, which provides interactive maps, objects with the location marked on the camera. And in case the unit is to be used for work on the “old road”, Rikuchchi advises to prepare printed instructions for operators: sometimes, to solve the problem, they check on paper. Of course, you need to conduct training and practice: if the operators do not have proper training and experience, they are sure to lose everything. 'And then try to explain to the client how the unidentified car got through the territory, free loading, - Rikuchchi commented. – The report is much better: the system worked, the offender was detained and $20,000 saved. iSegtronic team to solve this problem is to use the interactive 3D KGB perimeter system that solves the problems of operator training. Training a new operator takes 20 minutes. 6. Thermal Expansion Accounting - Excess. . . Installing the perimeter protection system outdoors, especially in continental climate, is subject to considerable fluctuations in temperature, resulting in the wiring system can expand and contract. This must be considered when installing power lines. 'If you do not provide thermal expansion joints, you can face serious problems' - says Darin Dillon, business development manager Schomburg Convergint Technologies. Sick expansion joints in the form of loops only slightly increase installation cost, but their absence can result in significant costs. 7. Municipalities own the infrastructure on their territory... When working with local clients, the situation may arise where the equipment is installed on public infrastructure. Or premises that the client believes to be so. However, they may not be aware of this, warns Eric Yunag, President and CEO of 'Dakota Security Systems': 'One of the stages of the system design process is to identify the owner of the infrastructure, which will potentially be used for its implementation. 'He advises integrators to work hard with clients to verify accurately that the poles, manholes and cable channels are their property. Before installing this equipment on light poles, it must be available in a separate resolution, even if your client is the municipality. Otherwise, there may come a time when the real owner will have to dismantle the equipment or cables. And that can lead to serious costs - to install poles and pillars for the equipment installer.
